IV Environmental Stewardship Commentary: Approach Not only is Odwalla environment- and health-conscious in their business practices and external public relations, but they also pay close attention to ecology internally. Odwalla's approach to environmental stewardship is comprehensive and impressive: recycling or reuse of office and production material (e.g., paper, plastic, pulp/peel), acquisition of recycled raw materials where possible, moving toward alternative fuels, preference toward suppliers that embrace sustainable practices, active participation in coalitions and associations, and community education. Environmental values are integrated as part of the culture; employees are involved in looking for new ways to "close the loop." Commentary: Deployment Deployment of this approach involves employees in a process that defined core values, and used those common values as the basis for creating a culture that acts more like a community than a company. Each staff members contribution is key to upholding the vision of environmental stewardship. Odwalla conducted an eco-audit last year to measure environmental impact and identify areas for improvement, and has a commitment to re-evaluate annually. Commentary: Results Results are evident through the depth and variety of community projects and initiatives aimed at fulfilling Odwalla's leadership role. Trend data in key performance areas reinforces these results over the years to come. |
